News 4/10/07: Slate Run Angus was showcased in a local newspaper for our placing in the Midland Bull Test:

LOCAL CATTLE BREEDER’S BULLS SHINE IN BIG SKY COUNTRY
Eight Jackson county raised bulls traveled 1700 miles to compete at the world renowned Midland Bull Test Station in Columbus, MT.  The Midland Bull Test is considered America’s number one choice to compete in for objective measures and performance genetics for all breeds of beef cattle.  Over 720 Angus bulls from 198 breeders across the country from New York to Washington Ranchers entered their top end bulls to evaluate and compete in this prestigious and world-renowned bull test.
Slate Run Angus cattle operation is located on Camba Road in Franklin Township, Jackson County.  They had the third highest average daily gain pen of bulls sired by the highly acclaimed bull Traveler 004.  Slate Run was only .02 hundred’s of a pound off from being the number one pen of bulls.  Only 70 percent of the bulls qualify for the sale on April 6.  90 percent of the Slate Run bulls qualified.
This was a great accomplishment for owners Duane and Sandy Plymale.  Duane has been breeding Angus cattle artificially for over 40 years, and with eight generation of genetics from top proven bulls is able to compete with some of the biggest ranches in the country.

They only run 50 cows on their 144 acre farm so selection of the very best proven bulls is important so they can compete against much larger operations that have almost unlimited resources.  Raising top cattle has been a dream of Duane’s from his early days as an Animal Science graduate from Brigham Young University and the University of Tennessee.
Since his retirement from The Ohio State University, Duane and Sandy have had more time to direct toward their family farm operation and expand marketing of their genetics to western cattle ranches.  Most of last years bull calf crop was purchased by Montana breeders who realized the genetic package of eight generations of AI breeding from Slate Run.  As one Wyoming cattle rancher said, “some of the very best calves we have raised were from Slate Run bulls.”
To learn more about the Jackson County’s cattle breeder look up www.slaterunangus.com on the web.  Duane and Sandy’s Angus cattle motto is “A small herd with big time genetics.”

About Our Farm

Our farm is located in the beautiful rolling hills of southeastern Ohio. We have 160 acres of pasture which consist primarily of fescue and bluegrass. We are basically a grass management program and run a 60 cow herd on our farm. Most cows are artificially bred in the spring to top performing bulls of the breed. Our farm is family owned and operated by Duane and Sandy Plymale.

About Our Bulls

We have been using proven bulls since the late 60's. We believe that depth of proven bulls and the pedigree equals predictability in desirable performance and maternal traits in the female. Click here for some current and recently used bulls that we have identified and are using in our program.

Our 2007 calf models will include bulls by these sires as well as dams sired by some of these bulls. We will have pictures by early summer with future herd bulls and female prospects.

About Our Cow Herd

Our females are backed by more than six to eight generations of performance tested A.I. proven bulls on both sides of the pedigree. We have been breeding A.I. since the 60's. Our herd in the 60's and early 70's was built out of females from the top performance minded breeders and herds in the country: Wye Plantation of Maryland, Sun Up Emulous of Missouri, Bellemonte Farms of Virginia, Stone Gate Farms of Kentucky and Jorgenson Bros. of South Dakota.

During 2007 we added four females from the University of Tennessee Research and Performance herd. The University of Tennessee has one of the oldest and best grass, fescue management cow herds in the country dating back to the early 50's and 60's. These females like most UT cows will exhibit dimension, volume, growth, milk and correctness. They all trace back to famous Pathfinder cows in the UT herd and show an outstanding set of numbers across the board ranking in the top 10 percent in most category's. They will fit in nicely into the Slate Run Angus cow herd in adding more performance on grass management.

Today, we offer cattle that have depth of breeding and predictability in growth, maternal traits and performance. Most of our cows have 6-8 generations of artificial breeding from top Path Finder and identified bulls in the Angus breed. Most of our Angus bulls grow out to be ton plus bulls on grass. Our females are noted for growth, excellent udder structure, disposition, fertility and hardiness.

Our cattle are raised on a grass management program of primarily fescue. They usually perform better for new owners that provide better forages and less stress on cattle per acre.

We always have outstanding A.I. bulls for sale in the fall, winter, and early spring. Click here for our bull calf prospects. We offer some select heifers for sale that will be very competative on the show circuit. We desire to sell some of our top heifers to showmanship clientele. Click here for our outstanding heifer prospects.

We have had numerous county fair champions and the Eastern National Champion Steers back in the 80's. Click here for show heifer prospects.
